We talk a lot here about physical reconditioning — VO2 max, strength, mobility, everything that makes a body go the distance. But there is another kind of reconditioning we discuss far less: the one happening in our heads, as the world changes its very nature while we look elsewhere.

That is exactly the subject of the book I just finished: 0/1, by Chuck Mountain. Two digits, he argues, are enough to describe our era. The 0 is the old organic world: be born, work, retire. The 1 is the synthetic world switching on before our eyes, without warning.

Three questions that floored me

Why is fertility collapsing almost everywhere on Earth, at the same time, in countries that share neither culture nor politics? Why is pay-as-you-go retirement a promise whose payers vanish year after year? And above all: what happens to the value of work when intelligence — the kind that used to be expensive to train, recruit and retain — stops being scarce?

No prophecy, no preaching

What I appreciate most is that this book neither prophesies nor preaches. Chuck Mountain describes the state of things coldly, "with the calm of a physicist watching water turn to ice." No promise of catastrophe, no promise of salvation — just the description of a phase transition already underway, and the question it puts to each of us: who governs a civilization that no longer needs most of its hands?

It is, in a way, the civilizational version of what we try to do here at the scale of one body: don't wait for the shift to be over before you start preparing for it.

And then?

0/1 is the first volume of a historical cycle — the author points to a second book, Irremplaçable (currently in French), which picks up the next logical question: now that you understand the tide, how do you make yourself, precisely, irreplaceable?

Available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German.
